though still based in the textured guitar work and fractured synths of its predecessor ‘EVERYTHING THAT RISES MUST RISE’ (2002), the 10 compositions that constitute ‘TRANSITIVE VERSES’ express themselves through a fantastic range of sonic approaches. presented as a series of instrumental collages which shift dramatically in mood and direction, the record seamlessly drifts between reflective shoegazing melodies, dreamy electronic pop and hypnotic drone passages, interspersed with several ambient interludes for a vaguely cinematic effect. recorded throughout most of 2004, ‘TRANSITIVE VERSES’ was composed and recorded by sonny james, enlisting the studio hands of bret winans (drslone), nick andre, clay payton, ryohei hinokuma as well as several others to provide various types of instrumentation and programming to this singular and futuristic audio landscape.
"This new Brookhaven album unwinds like a slow waking
from a dream. Nine hazy, mesmerizing instrumental beauties. In turn Transitive
Verses brings to mind four 'M's -- M83, Mogwai, My Bloody Valentine and Morricone
-- but wholly without being imitative. On this, their follow-up to 2001's Everything
That Rises Must Rise, they've taken their music to a whole new plane. Some elements
have been retained such as their warm shimmery guitar twang and their blend
of acoustic drumming and programmed beats plus some lingering shadows of post-rock-ness,
while others have been set aside for the time being. For one thing, although
there is a heavier synthesizer presence on this album, this is definitely less
woozily spacey than their previous work, and much more composed. Whereas much
of Everything Rises took a gradual meandering path that drifted in and out of
focus seemingly at random, their new material seems more fully realized, with
each song following a more defined arch. The results are ultra dynamic, but
somehow still thoroughly gentle at the same time. Wonderful!"

our second collection of recordings and introduction to 2003. this release was
hand-numbered and limited to 300 copies! the natural companion piece to its
2002 predecessor SONS OF WINDED ARMIES, wreck process is an evolution in production
and concept. featuring the sound of several new recording artists, as well as
four separate cover images, with andrew chapman, shawn conte, eric lendl, and
ben winans each lending their visual design talents to us once again. ten new
tracks featuring familiar names such as clay payton, roche and telefecteau,
as well as newer artists nick andre, drslone, JRK and mio. unfortunately this
record is out of print, but if you are interested in obtaining a CDR copy we
can get you one for sure.
“Expel Records seems to be developing a full crop of earthy electronic acts, as evidenced by their recent Wreck Process label compilation. This track (DRSLONE ‘CLYDESDALE STOMPER’) felt familiar on first listen, like an old pair of shoes, a comfy throwback to the soft/hard Rephlex aesthetic of the late 90s, but with an updated rhythmic feel. Clickety percussion programming rattles along as swells of round-edged synth rise and ebb, flirting with melody, but infested with plunking electric keyboards and quick, jabbing synth stabs. a highly enjoyable listen that’ll have you waxing nostalgic for all that late-90s techno you came up on.”

released in 2002, SONS OF WINDED ARMIES is our stable of recording artists mapping out their distinctive territory for the first time. while technically a compilation, SWA is less a way of sampling our artists by, and more of a single collective statement created through digital and analog sound design, live instruments and beats both programmed and sampled. it contains the singles “METABOLIC” by ECRU, “THE RIVAL FUTURE” by BROOKHAVEN and “JOK STER BLUR” by ROCHE, in addition to contributions from CLAY PAYTON, TELEFECTEAU and RYOHEI HINOKUMA. this record is ten tracks that demand to be blasted. featuring sleeve design by eric lendl and shawn conte.
“Here's a fine way to get acquainted with SF label
Expel Records who put out the lovely Brookhaven album. If you've had a chance
to hear and enjoy that record or if you're a fan of such mellow groups like
The Album Leaf, Tristeza or Languis, you're certain to enjoy this compilation
featuring a couple nice tracks from Brookhaven as well as Telefecteau, Roche,
Clay Payton, Ecru, and Hinokuma. They all fall somewhere on a spectrum of minimal
electronics blended with more traditional indie-type elements (guitars, live
drums). Funky sampled beats and cold, beautiful synth washes, little lo-fi keyboard
bedroom recordings and more polished productions all find their way into this
collection, hopefully signaling more full lengths on the way from Expel artists.
Quite nice!” -aquarius records, SF

exp001 BROOKHAVEN ‘EVERYTHING THAT RISES MUST RISE’
1. lines which limit him
2. my brothers twin is genesis
3. monism
4. two platforms
5. everything that rises
6. finite could be enough
7. there were never any others to speak of [MP3]
brookhaven’s debut is a sardonic escape from the hackneyed
trends occurring in music today. it plays like a diamond mist under the sun
of dawn and is essential for headphone listening. recorded in 2001, ‘EVERYTHING
THAT RISES MUST RISE’ is a collection of seven unique stereo compositions
in which trebly guitars surge, crack and compete for frequency with synthesized
melodies and stark ambient drones. what ensues is a lucid aural landscape which
blends effortlessly from song to structure. transcend time with the radiant,
anthemic pulse of “finite could be enough” or the miasmic gleam
of “there were never any others to speak of” and enjoy the scenery.
“guitars of the willowy twang and trippy spaced-out kind converge, as do bright programmed beats and acoustic percussion in this new instrumental group from san francisco. heavy waves of reverb-drenched post-rock chord progressions crash over slinkily plucked melodies. a soaring and at times quite hypnotic 25 minutes. Nice!” -aquarius records, SF
“a variety of progressive post-rock guitar melodies
ranging from subtle and trance-inducing loops to psychedelic crescendos of reverb
and feedback struggle for dominance, neither one winning out in the end. Layer
these over a healthy dose of mixed beats - electronic and organic - and you've
got all the necessary ingredients to create a great instrumental record.“
